Our philosophy

We do it because we care.

We are always thinking about how our decisions impact the environment. That’s in everything we do. From planning and production to shipping and recycling. But we don’t compromise. A GreenHeart™ product has the features and design that everyone expects. Otherwise you wouldn’t buy it. Would you?

GreenHeart™. Our commitment to making the biggest possible sustainable impact. Driven by green innovation. Implemented everywhere. Never compromising. On quality. On design. On features.

Our GreenHeart™ goals are:

Reduce CO2 footprint of our activities by 20% by 2015

Reduce CO2 footprint in the lifecycle of our phones by 15% by 2015

Collect 1 million phones annually through our Global Take-Back programme by 2011

What makes a GreenHeart™

Many small steps. One giant leap.

Less packaging. No paper manual. Waterborne paint. Recycled plastics. A low-energy charger. It's not how big each step is that matters. It's the number of steps you take. Take reducing packaging, for instance. A small step for us, but it means we send more phones with each shipment. And replacing a paper manual with a digital e-manual saves paper. That mounts up to a lot of trees. Wouldn't you agree?

We've been working on ways to make all our phones and accessories more eco-smart for a while now. And you'll find our latest green innovations in our GreenHeart™ products.

We've started our leap forward. But we've not landed yet. We want to make every Sony Ericsson phone and accessory a GreenHeart™ product. Step by step we'll get there.

Recycled Plastics

By using recycled plastics when we produce GreenHeart™ phones, we're giving water bottles and CDs a second home. Since recycling is far more energy efficient than producing new plastics, this reduces the carbon footprint of our products and saves non-renewable resources.

C901 GreenHeart™, Naite™, Elm™, Hazel™ and Cedar™ contains ≥ 50 % post consumer recycled plastics. Aspen™ contains about 30 % post consumer recycled plastics and other GreenHeart™ smartphones contain 50-70 % of post consumer recycled plastics in the back covers.

Waterborne Paint

We have worked hard to use waterborne paint in as many GreenHeart™ products as possible. Waterborne paints significantly lower emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) compared to solvent-based paints. Painted with waterborne paint, GreenHeart™ phones are just as beautiful as any of our other phones.

E-manual

We've replaced paper manuals with an electronic version in the phone, so it's always there when you need it. And it helps us cut down on paper usage and transport. By replacing the standard manual in one million phones, we save 350 tonnes of paper. This equals 13,000 trees and 75,000 cubic metres of water.

Reduced Packaging

We've optimised the packaging of all our phones to make them more eco-smart. The phones are packed in attractive yet smaller, lighter boxes to reduce the environmental impacts of transport and preserve precious natural resources. The smaller packaging allows us to send more phones with each shipment, cutting down CO2 from transportation and saving non-renewable fuels.

All our boxes are made of 100% paper and depending on the particular box construction the amount of recycled material differs but in our 2011 packaging portfolio it is never less than 35 %. For virgin paper material we can trace its origin and we use vegetable oil based ink for CMYK printing.

Green Charger

GreenHeart™ charger comply with the Energy Star level V and have a standby power-loss that is ≤30mW. This means less power consumption. All Sony Ericsson chargers are PVC free since the end of 2009.

Substance Control

We are committed leading the market into phasing out hazardous substances and we are dedicated to continuing our work in this area.

For more information regarding Sony Ericssons work with substance control please refer to Substances of concern

We also supply complete material declarations for our phones in the Support section.

Green Applications

With green applications such as Walkmate Eco and EcoMate, you really can walk the talk about being eco-smart. Walkmate Eco helps you make a greener choice by showing the CO2 reduction of the steps you take, compared to driving the same distance by car. And EcoMate shows you how you make smarter greener choices every day in an easy and fun way. Small things that make a big difference. With Android™ Smartphones there are several green applications available on Android Market™.

GreenHeart™ accessories

Our accessory range includes several eco-smart accessories, like the energy-efficient Charger EP800 and the VH410 headset. More than 50 % of the hard plastic parts in the MH300 are made of recycled plastics.

Global Take-Back programme

Our Global Take-Back programme ensures that mobile phones do not end up in landfills. They are sent to recycling facilities specialised in mobile phone recycling. Components and materials can be used again, reducing the need to extract non-renewable resources and refine material for new products. This leads to a reduction in e-waste, saving resources, energy and chemicals.
