Frequently asked questions

The Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager offers SMS support and it also supports concatenated SMS. A single SMS can support up to 160 characters; concatenated SMS can handle larger messages by sending/receiving several SMS messages, automatically.

- Right-click My Computer. In the pop-up menu that appears, click Manage.
- On the left-hand side of the window that appears, click Disk Management.
- A list of connected drives will appear on the right-hand side of the window. Right-click the new drive (your mobile broadband device) and select “Change drive letter and path(s).”
- Click Change, then choose a new drive letter for your mobile broadband device in the drop-down box. Make sure you use a letter that isn’t already assigned to something else. Click OK, then click OK again.

Once you have finished installing Wireless Manager and the MD300's drivers, you can use the flash memory in the MD300 to store personal files. You don't need to format the MD300 to use it. However, if you do decide to format the drive, make sure you remove the device after the format is complete, then wait at least 10 seconds before you reconnect it. Otherwise, data you copy to the MD300 may be corrupt or may not copy at all.

- Do you have the SIM card inserted correctly? With the contacts on the card facing down towards the USB plug and the notched part of the card facing left, firmly press in on the SIM card until you feel and hear a click.
- Is the MD300 drawing enough power? In most cases, a single USB port provides enough power to correctly operate the MD300. However, on some notebook computers with certain power profiles, the MD300 may need the power from two USB ports to function properly. Use the extension cable provided in the MD300's packaging to connect the device to two USB ports.
- Are the modem drivers installed correctly? Check Windows' Device Manager to make sure your software correctly installed the modem drivers. To open the Device Manager, right-click on My Computer, click the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button. You should see:
- "Sony Ericsson MD300 Wireless Data Modem" and "Sony Ericsson MD300 Wireless Modem" under Modems (you may need to click the plus sign [+] next to Modems to expand the list);
- "Sony Ericsson MD300 Mobile Broadband Network Adapter" under Network Adapters;
- "Sony Ericsson MD300 Mobile Broadband Command Interface" under Ports;
- "Sony Ericsson SIM Card Reader" under Smart Card Readers; and
- "SEMC WMC Composite Device", "Sony Ericsson MD300 Mobile Broadband Device Management", "Sony Ericsson MD300 Mobile Broadband Ethernet Control" and "Sony Ericsson MD300 Mobile Broadband Network Adapter" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If any of the above drivers are missing (or have an exclamation mark next to them), uninstall and reinstall the Wireless Manager software.

- Are the proxy settings set correctly? LAN proxy settings on the Internet or email client can easily prevent you from being able to browse. To check the proxy settings in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, and click the Connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button. If “Use a proxy server for your LAN” is checked, uncheck it, then click OK. Click OK again, close Internet Explorer, then reopen the program and try again.
- Is Wireless Manager configured correctly? If you've changed the settings in Wireless Manager, you may not be able to browse. In Wireless Manager, click View, then Settings.
- Under Profiles, make sure “Let Wireless Manager Choose the Connection Profile” is checked.
- Under Mobile Networks, make sure “Automatically Choose a Network” is checked.
- Is traffic being routed away by another application or connection? Make sure no other network connections (in Start > Control Panel > Network Connections) are active, and check the System Tray (bottom right corner of the screen) to make sure no other applications are trying to use the connection.
- Are the VPN settings configured correctly? If you're attempting to connect to a VPN (Virtual Private Network), e.g. at an office, make sure you have the settings configured properly. Check with your office's network administrator to get the correct settings.
- Your firewall may be interfering with the MD300's ability to browse the Web. Try putting your firewall into training mode (refer to your firewall's documentation for instructions) to see if the application requires permission to access the Internet.
- Still having problems browsing? Try resetting the MD300 and Wireless Manager. Close Wireless Manager (and check the system tray to make sure it has fully exited), then remove the MD300 using Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray. Reconnect the MD300, then restart Wireless Manager. Try to browse again.

- In Wireless Manager: Click View, then Settings. Under Locks, the radio button for SIM lock should be set to “Off.” If it's set to “On,” you'll need to enter your PIN to unlock it. If you don't know your PIN, you'll need to check with your service provider to obtain it.
- Is SIM-ME Lock activated? In certain configurations, the service provider or network administrator can choose to activate a feature of the MD300 called SIM-ME lock. This feature allows Wireless Manager to detect a “foreign” SIM card, and then lock it. You'll need to enter a PIN code to unlock this feature. If you don't have this code, check with your service provider or network administrator.

- Did anything happen when you connected the MD300 to the USB port? The MD300 has a flash drive that contains the installation program, which Windows will usually recognise (and run if your computer has Autorun enabled). However, if the installation doesn’t automatically start, you can click Start, then Run, then type E:/setup.exe and press “Enter.” (E:, in this case, represents the letter Windows assigns to the flash drive – this may be any letter.)
- If Windows does not recognise the flash drive, try shutting down the computer, removing the drive, restarting the computer, then reinstalling the drive. As the MD300’s flash drive uses the standard Windows USB drivers, your computer should now recognise the drive.
- If restarting doesn’t fix the issue, there could be an issue with your computer. Refer to your computer's original equipment manufacturer for support.
- If Windows recognises the flash drive, but you can’t find the setup.exe file, you may have a bad installation on your drive. Go to www.sonyericsson.com/support to download the program.
- If the installation started, but you accidentally clicked Cancel, simply remove the flash drive from the machine (using Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware icon, located at the bottom right corner of the screen), then reinsert the drive and begin the installation again.
- If the software “freezes” during installation, don't worry. Long pauses for several minutes are normal. Your computer is installing the drivers the MD300 will need to function properly. If you confirm that the software is actually freezing (and not just installing drivers), you should:
- Close all applications except the MD300 installation.
- Make sure you didn't accidentally cancel the installation.
- Run the installation again (this time with all extraneous programs closed) and check to make sure the installation completes.
- Reboot the PC and reinstall the software.
- If you're using the install package pre-loaded on the flash drive, try the version available at www.sonyericcson.com/support.
- If the setup program loads and runs, but you get an error message, note down what the message says. There are several possible error messages you may encounter while attempting to install Wireless Manager:
- Disk space: Make sure you have at least 30MB of free disk space on the PC before you try to install the software.
- User must have Administrator privilege: You'll need to be logged in as Administrator when attempting to install the software.
- Installation has caused an error and will be shut down: Reboot the computer, close all unrelated programs, and re-attempt the installation.
- If you still can’t install Wireless Manager on your PC, make sure your computer meets the minimum operating requirements of Wireless Manager. The PC must be running Windows 2000, XP or Vista, and it must have at least 110MB of free disk space.

If you are connecting (you have signal strength, and Wireless Manager is showing data upload/download), go to the “Browsing Issues” section. If you aren't connecting. . .
- Are you in an area with service? The MD300 can connect to UMTS, HSDPA, EDGE and GPRS, so it works in most areas. But of course, if you're in an area where you don’t have service, you won’t be able to connect. Check service in the area using a mobile phone, if possible. If not, Wireless Manager will display the signal strength (or lack of). If there’s no service in the area, move to another area and try again.
- Is there a temporary network problem? Check with your service provider to make sure there are no issues with your network.
- Are you roaming in an area where your provider doesn’t have an agreement? Again, check with the service provider. While you may still be able to connect in this scenario, additional usage charges may apply, so it’s a good idea to check with your provider for its recommendations.
- Has Wireless Manager started? If not, click Start, Programs, Sony Ericsson, Wireless Manager and click on the Wireless Manager icon. Also, make sure the card is seated properly in the USB slot.
- Is there interference from another network adapter? Click Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Check to see that no other network adapters apart from the MD300 are active. If there are, right-click them and select “Disable.” Note that you can re-enable the connection at any time by right-clicking it and selecting “Enable.”
- Are there other modems installed in Wireless Manager? If you've used Wireless Manager before for a different PC card or USB adapter, the program might have a problem distinguishing between the two. The easiest way to correct this problem is to uninstall and reinstall Wireless Manager, as detailed in “Installation."
- If Wireless Manager shows that you're connected, but you can't get any data to move, click Start, Control Panel, and Network Connections. Check the connection for the MD300 to make sure it’s enabled. If not, right-click the connection and select “Enable.”

If you're using the free demo version of launch 2 net included with your MD300, please note that it can only establish 10 connections for five minutes and 5 MB respectively each. After this trial period, please activate your software to get unlimited use. Activation is free.

- Is the MD300 fully seated in the USB port?
- Have you already installed the Wireless Manager software and the modem drivers? If not, check the Quick Start Guide for installation instructions.
- Are the drivers and software correctly installed? Uninstall and reinstall Wireless Manager and the modem drivers.
- Did you start the Wireless Manager application? Normally, Wireless Manager will load itself as soon as it detects the MD300 has been connected to the computer, but occasionally you may need to click Start, Programs, All Programs, Sony Ericsson, Wireless Manager and click the Wireless Manager icon (alternatively, you may also have a shortcut on the desktop that you can double-click).

If the installation finished improperly or some of Wireless Manager’s files become corrupted, the program may crash. If so, it’s a good idea to uninstall and reinstall the program. To enable you to make sure you have an uncorrupted copy of the program, this section will cover reinstallation from the Support Web site at www.sonyericsson.com/support.
